"ST.
LUCIA'S SOCA GODDESS"
According to legend, Cupid's arrows came in two varieties:
the Golden Arrow,
which
signifies true love and the Leaden Arrow, which represents
sensual excitement. Our modern day Q-Pid, the Lucian goddess
of soca, employ her powerful vocal coupled with her
electrifying moves (wining skills) to infect true love and
sensual excitement with the same effect.
Born in November of 1979 in sweet St Lucia, The Helen of the
West Indies, Melissa Moses spent her
earlier years as part of numerous school choirs and musical
groups. This in itself began to shape her yet undeveloped
musical identity. Having fostered a keen desire and yearning
to sing soca, she acknowledged the need to align herself
with individuals capable of assisting her towards that goal.
Courtney Louis, her producer and Nigel Nicholas artiste with
Gentlemen on Business (G.O.B) were her keys into the soca
industry. Courtney "Dirty Dutch" Louis has long been
regarded as one of the top soca producers. Having an already
established clientele regionally and internationally, he had
just the recipe to apply to Melissa.
Fast forward to St. Lucia Carnival 2003.....with Melissa's
powerful vocals, a dash of her contagious excitement, mixed
with two cups of Courtney's infectious soca beats....and
Voila!!!!!.... Melissa transcended and the dynamic, sexy and
crafty Q-Pid was introduced into the soca arena. She burst
on the seen with her first big single "Helicopter Dance."
In 2004 saw the birth of New Generation soca stage. The
first of its’ kind this tent was designed primarily for soca
artiste in St Lucia. Q-Pid seized the opportunity and
showcased her talents on the N.G. Soca Stage platform.
Moving to 2005 Q-Pid made enormous strides in the soca arena
with the release of hits like Carnival Again, Born to be
free and the ladies favourite Sticking.
These songs catapulted her into the Carnival spotlight
causing her fan base to
grow
rapidly as her music and her highly energetic stage persona
was on the lips of many, both young and old. Flattering
compliments have compared her to the likes of Trinidad and
Tobago's Denise Belfon and Destra Garcia. Although portrayed
as a strong female artiste, Q-Pid also extended a softer,
more laidback shy sweetness in her personality.
Every year her songs have dominated the airwaves in St.
Lucia and around the region in 2006, it was no different.
With her biggest release to date, “Water” she landed a one
year contract with Cable & Wireless. A toast of champagne
glasses with the soca man himself Shurwayne Winchester
alongside Alpha, Ninja Dan, Mantius, Platinum George and
Illah-Man welcomed Q-Pid to the b-Mobile family. As an
artiste her evolution has been uniform and positive.
Performing both locally and abroad, "Q-Pid" has captured
audiences and has managed to stamp a niche all her own.
