Sir John George Melvin Compton
|
Following the death
of Sir John Compton on Friday 07, September 2007, the funeral service
of the great leader will be held on Tuesday 18th September 2007,
at the Minor Basilica of the Immaculate Conception, more
commonly known as "The Cathedral."
"The Cathedral” is located
opposite the Derek Walcott Square
on Micoud Street, Castries and it was elevated to the status of
a Minor Basilica in May 1999, as part of the centenary
celebrations. It is one of the largest cathedrals in the
Caribbean, measuring 200ft long by 100ft wide and is decorated
inside with a number of wonderful murals by St Lucian artist Dunstan St Omer (the
designer of St Lucia’s National Flag).
As a mark of
respect for Sir John, the 18, September has been declared a
National Holiday (public holiday) and the Government has
called on all organisations and businesses in St Lucia to close
and also postpone all activities of a sporting or festive nature
leading up to the day of the funeral.
Given the
stature and respect people have for Sir John, upon his death a
committee was formed to make arrangements for the funeral, and
under the chairmanship of former Prime Minister Dr Bryan Michael
Pilgrim, a number of events will take place, leading up to the
funeral service on 18, September.
For persons based in the UK
a Book of Condolence has been
opened at the St Lucia High Commissioners office, in London.
From now
until Friday 21,September 2007,persons are invited to visit the
