The gates opened from 3:00pm on a beautiful
sunny Sunday 11th December, and the
crowd started to pour in for one of the best shows to be held
in St. Lucia this year at the Pigeon Island
Landmark, situated in the north of the island of
St. Lucia, in the heart of the Caribbean. The
only other event which out ranks it in numbers,
we have been reliably informed would have been
the 2005 St.Lucia Jazz Festival, held in May of
this year. The Concert which ran with the theme
of the Mighty Sparrow celebrating his 70th
Birthday this year and also his Golden Jubilee
of 50 years in the Calypso Arena was dubbed
“The Sparrow Gold Show”.

Promptly
at 5:00pm the show started with some very short
remarks from the organizers Radio St. Lucia, the
Title sponsor Cable & Wireless Ltd. and SMJ
Beverages. There were also many other companies
whom did not miss the opportunity to tag on to
such a prestigious event.
Master of ceremonies for the show was non other
than St.Lucia’s Kennedy “Boots” Samuels Known
for his Comedy, Wit and his love for the
St.Lucian Folklore. |

Patrons were entertained with an opening dance
from the Crystallite Dancers and renditions from
some of St.Lucia’s best in Calypso, all past
kings in their own right, The Educator, The
Invader, The Mighty Pep, The 2005 Calypso King
Wally who were accompanied by two new comers
this year, The Animator and Little Ginger.
 But
it wasn’t too long when all broke loose with the
appearance of the King of Calypso himself,
Slinger Francisco, The
Mighty
Sparrow. The 70 year old Calypso king of the
world entertained a mighty crowd of over 2500
persons with a number of his famous renditions
which has gained
popularity over the kings many years in the
business. The Sparrow Gold Show saw the Slinger
Francisco perform for a straight 2 hours before
making his departure from the stage. The
 Sparrow
Gold Show will truly remain on the lips
of St. Lucian’s as being one of the most
unforgettable moments for 2005.
Not even the
older folks could keep themselves away from
this show, as The Mighty Sparrow stuck to
tradition and gave patrons one of the best shows
St.Lucia has ever seen.
